Claire Emilie Martin (Founder and Editor)
Earned her B.A. and M.A. in Spanish at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and her Ph.D. at Yale University. She is Professor of Spanish, co-Advisor and Co-Director of the Spanish Program at California State University, Long Beach where she teaches nineteenth and twentieth-century Latin American literature. In 2005, she received the Outstanding Professor Award. In 1995, she published Alejo Carpentier y los crónicas de Indias. She co-authored with María Cristina Guiñazú, Las mujeres toman la palabra: escritura femenina del siglo XIX (2001). In 2010, she edited Cien años después: La literatura de mujeres en América Latina: El legado de Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera y Clorinda Matto de Turner. In 2011, she co-edited with Nelly Goswitz a critical edition of Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera’s Los amores de Hortensia. Historia Contemporánea, and in 2012, the anthology Retomando la palabra: las pioneras del diecinueve en diálogo con la crítica contemporánea, Iberoamericana. She also is co-editor of the “Argentina” section of the Handbook of Latin American Studies for the Library of Congress.

Is a docent in the University Library at Bowling Green State University. She earned a MLIS degree from Kent State University and a Master’s degree in Education from Bowling Green State University. She was born in Peru, grew up in Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil, and has been educated in the U.S. Her diverse upbringing and global perspectives has influenced her publications and presentations on topics related to library services, diversity and mentoring, international students, social media, and outreach services to minorities. Most recently, she has co-authored a book chapter about bilingual library instruction for international students. She is a recipient of a 2004 IMLS “New Librarians, New Leaders” Scholarship, a 2005 American Library Association (ALA) Spectrum Scholar, a 2010 ALA Emerging Leader, and an ALA Council-at-Large Member.
